MA Industrial Design student Cécile Maïa Pujol’s innovative seating concept was awarded the Roche Bobois Design Award. The Lady B chair was showcased at Central Saint Martins Degree Show Two in June 2014 and went into production to be on sale in all Roche Bobois showrooms in Autumn 2014.
For the third edition of the Roche Bobois award, the high-end furniture company teamed up with Central Saint Martins. The competition was launched late in 2012, with students from MA Material Futures and MA Industrial Design invited to respond.
The design brief was set by Roche Bobois and embedded into the MA syllabus. The young designers were asked to explore the cultural symbolism of domestic seating and to develop new insights into how people use seating in their living spaces.
Cécile Maïa Pujol, a young French designer on our MA Industrial Design course, scooped first prize with her contemporary interpretation of the conversation chair. The butterfly-shaped asymmetrical silhouette of Pujol’s chair invites the sitter to try different resting positions.
The Lady B chair wooed the jury with its highly original, ergonomic and poetic shape. Pujol’s insight into the ways that design can influence social interaction – and her genuine commitment to environmental sustainability – also impressed the jury.
