Palladium Alliance Brooch, Central Saint Martins student project

Continuing to nurture new creative talent, the Palladium Alliance announced the extension and development of its partnership with Central Saint Martins. The college is the first collaborator announced as part of the Palladium Visions project series.

Following on from a highly successful project in 2011 the Palladium Alliance continued its commitment to nurture new talent by collaborating with Central Saint Martins as part of the Palladium Visions 2012 project series. A rare platinum group metal, Palladium is an incredibly versatile and contemporary precious metal that is durable, lightweight and uniquely naturally white.

Engaging students from the MA Design; Jewellery, Ceramics or Furniture course, the College and Palladium Alliance challenged participants to craft a set of jewellery based on the theme 'lightness and strength' - two of the key properties of the precious metal.

The entries were judged by a panel of experts, drawn from some of the College’s most skilled tutors and prominent alumni and five inspirational designs will be selected as finalists and produced as Palladium creations. These were unveiled as part of a Palladium showcase at London Fashion Week in February 2012 where the 1st and 2nd place winners were to be selected and awarded cash prizes.

The students were given the creative freedom to experiment and innovate with this precious metal and offered an invaluable chance to explore and define palladium’s varied applications.

Simon Fraser, Course Director of MA Design; Jewellery, Ceramics or Furniture at Central Saint Martins, commented: “Following the success of last year’s initiative, we are thrilled to be working with Palladium, for a second year. This is fantastic platform that both showcases our students' talent and also allows them to develop and innovate their design skills through working with such a unique and contemporary precious metal. The showcase that Palladium will also offer the winning designers is a critical platform in recognising the next generation of design talent.”

John Stark, Chairman for the Palladium Alliance International commented: “We were so inspired by the creativity of the College’s students last year that we wanted to work with this year’s students to give them the opportunity to challenge their creativity and innovation; through the unique attributes of Palladium.”
