In the run up to the London Olympics, four graduates from each of the UAL colleges were handpicked to visually interpret the ‘Journey to Greatness’ of some of the world’s finest athletes.
The 16 graduates were briefed to produce one bespoke t-shirt collection in five weeks inspired by The Journey to Greatness. They were challenged by UK artist Dave White and London College of Communication Dean of Design, Lawrence Zeegen, to interpret what drives world-class athletes in the run up to the London Olympics and explore this journey through graphic art to be showcased in a t-shirt collection.
Over five weeks, graduates were given incredible hands on experiences by Nike, exploring the brands’ current technology, including, bespoke packaging and materials and meeting and working with some of the world’s finest athletes.
The access to athletes acted as an incredible catalyst, with the graduates tapping into the intimacy and honesty of the athletes to inform their designs. Dave White remarked that: “very quickly, the groups began to push each other away from just designing a t-shirt, it became about physically and mentally understanding how these athletes function…one of the most unexpected things to happen was that the teams didn’t rely on previous techniques or media – nobody was predictable!”
The four designs were brought together to sit alongside each other in the Journey to Greatness collection sold in Nike Town.
