News UK launched an initiative called News 3.0 which was designed to ‘think the unthinkable’ about the future of news media and to identify, foster and promote the products, ideas and technologies that will change the way news is consumed.
With this in mind a select group of graduates from across MA Communication Design and MA Industrial Design were commissioned to research and develop user insights and translate these into concepts, which could be exhibited in ‘The Future of News’ pop up café in Soho to senior industry figures during London Design Week.
The genuinely innovative and inspirational outcomes ranged from printing news items on the back of receipts, to a return to news bards and even an e-reader for commuters to use on their way to and from work.
As Michael Byrne, Arts and Entertainment Manager of News UK said: ‘Working with Central Saint Martins has opened our minds to fresh thinking ideas… This project has really made News UK think differently – it has changed our thought and perception processes.’
