Introduction to Pedagogic Research

Introduction

What constitutes Pedagogic Research? This is a question which can sometimes be problematic compared to matters of pure or applied research within the disciplines. It can be situated alongside concepts such as Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, or may be a critical enquiry into your teaching practice, or a curriculum or teaching innovation you want to test and evaluate.

Who should attend?

This workshop will provide an outline of what pedagogic research is, and what it is not. It is suitable for all teaching staff who are new to research, or who have had a little experience and would like a refresher in the field. It is also suitable for students on postgraduate courses with an interest in developing their research skills in relation to learning and teaching.

What is the overall aim?

To outline the scope and nature of pedagogic research and provide a starting point for staff wishing to engage in it.

What are the expected Learning Outcomes?

By the end of the session, you will have:

  • acquired an understanding of what counts as pedagogic research
  • been introduced to sample methods and methodologies for conducting pedagogic research
  • been introduced to sample literature and theory useful for pedagogic research
  • started to consider where or how you might conduct pedagogic research in the future
  • been alerted to useful support materials, websites and resources to support pedagogic research
