Getting there and 'getting it': Thresholds concepts in PPD and in Art & Design
Introduction
‘Threshold concepts’ are the gateways to understanding in an area of study – the things students have to ‘get’ in order to progress, and which sometimes pose challenges – ‘troublesome knowledge’. These concepts may be about better understanding of a subject or those related to study, for example research or critical reflection. This workshop will explore what some of these concepts might be in your creative subjects, what might be troublesome and some possible ways to facilitate student learning.
Who should attend?
All staff who support learning.
What is the overall aim?
The aim of this workshop is to explore the notions of threshold concepts and troublesome knowledge and for participants to consider how these might provide a framework for curriculum planning and teaching activities.

- Understand the concepts of 'threshold concepts' and 'troublesome knowledge'
- Identify and describe some of the threshold concepts in your subject/support area
- Identify and analyse what might be 'troublesome knowledge' for your students
