An Introduction to Virtual Worlds in Art and Design Education

Introduction

A one day introduction to virtual worlds and how they can be used to engage students in creative learning experiences. Participants will gain hands on experience of creating an Avatar and basic objects in a virtual world. They will also be introduced to some of the underpinning theoretical principles for successfully using virtual worlds as educational resources.

Who should attend?

Academics and support staff who are interested in the potential of new technologies to enhance teaching and learning.

What is the overall aim?

To develop practical skills and theoretical knowledge relating to the use of virtual worlds in art and design education

What are the expected Learning Outcomes?

By the end of the session, you will have:

  • created and customised an avatar
  • learned how to navigate in a virtual world
  • created simple objects and uploaded textures
  • considered the pedagogic issues involved in using virtual worlds
  • used media such as video and audio within the virtual world
  • been introduced to further resources to develop your skills
