Sustainability in the Curriculum

Curriculum Development Funding: Sustainability in the Curriculum

Applications for 2011/12 are now closed. The call for applications for 2012/13 will open in September 2012.

Staff at the University of the Arts London are invited to submit applications for funding up to £3000 to support small-scale projects that will develop sustainability and environmental awareness in the curriculum. Projects must be completed within the 2011/12 academic year.

The scheme is open to full time and fractional staff (including technicians and support staff) and associate lecturers (minimum 100 contracted hours). You should not be currently enrolled on either the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching or Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice.

Criteria for the awards:

Projects should work to embed sustainability in the curriculum. Applications will be judged on the extent to which the project


• Builds on existing scholarship and/or practice of sustainability
• Provides measurable improvements in students' conceptions of sustainability/ethical awareness
• Is a clear and achievable small scale activity and is sustainable in itself
• Leads to outcomes which will be made available to others (internally and/or externally)
• Provides clear benefit to teaching and learning in the University
• Involves students in co-development of approaches to sustainable development

Successful projects might involve:

• Embedding approaches to sustainability and ethical awareness through course development and enhancement
• Creation of new learning resources to support the teaching of sustainability that have been embedded within core teaching of the course and that can be shared
• Co-development of approaches to sustainable development within courses/specialist areas that involve students, colleagues and appropriate stakeholders
• Development of a model of delivery/support that work towards goals of sustainability

Project outputs, or publicity materials describing them, will be published on University of the Arts London web pages

What can be covered by the funding:

• Replacement hours for teaching or normal duties (please calculate AL hours to include on costs)
• Small items of equipment for specific purposes related directly to the project
• Material costs such as videotape and travel costs
