Joe Joiner - Graphic Designer
Joe Joiner graduated from Chelsea's BA Graphic Design Communication in 2011 and now works freelance as a graphic designer.
Why did you choose to study BA Graphic Design Communication at Chelsea?
The flexibility of the course, which allows you to pursue any path you want as long as you keep to the brief.
I had no real idea of what I wanted to do, although applying 'art practice' to beautiful, functional objects that exist outside of galleries felt increasingly appealing.
And then there's the bonkers College campus, with the dark wood, red carpet, guilt frame vibe in one half of the building mixed with some more modern designs in the rest.
What was your first job after graduating?
After graduating in 2011 I worked as an intern at THIS IS Studio, who are a close knit team of graduates from Camberwell College of Art.
These guys allowed me to get stuck into some high profile jobs and gave me a solid foundation in how a design studio actually works. It was one of the best places I've ever worked in and I really respect what they've achieved.
So what are you currently working on?
A pitch for Jimmy Choo, a series of large scale installations for a new-build Academy school, branding and animation for a film production company and I'm also preparing some of my own print and sculptural work for an exhibition.
Do you have any tips for Chelsea students?
Don't wait until you finish your studies to get involved with projects outside of college, and be just the right amount of annoying to potential employers. It shows your passion.
