Graphic Design Communication Pathway

The London Design Programme Graphic Design Communication pathway offers a contemporary approach to graphic design and is ideal for students looking to develop professional digital, technical and presentation skills in this fast moving industry.

This course, based at Chelsea College of Arts, places a strong emphasis on live projects, such as working with contemporary youth orientated products, services and markets, while leading communicators and practitioners from a wide range of fields also share their views in a weekly guest speaker programme.

Students are encouraged to integrate theoretical studies alongside their work, in order to enrich their personal practice and help them develop a highly original portfolio.


Contemporary Typographic Design

This module allows students to develop a critical and creative approach to contemporary typography through the study of theoretical, practical and contextual concerns that inform the discipline of its design.

Students have the opportunity to explore and examine the demands of typography in the contemporary cultural context, taking into consideration modes of communication that determine how typography is generated, utilised and subsequently translated by the user.

The unit offers the application of practical and technical skills used in typographic design, through the conception and construction of individual typefaces. Students will employ computer software, such as Font Lab and Fontographer, in response to a negotiated contemporary theme, and their font will then be tested through its presentation in the context of a graphic poster.

Develop your visual language and research methodologies through time based media.

Psychogeography: 20,000 Streets Under the Sky

In this project we will develop the visual languages and research methodologies that we've explored to date through time based media. Since the birth of film and cinematography, designers have used moving image to explore and experiment. We will trace the ancestry of digital art in the abstract film movements of the 1920's, through to the present day, following practitioners as they use the technology of the day to develop their work in four dimensions.

The proliferation of cheap, powerful and accessible personal computers, coupled with advances in memory capacity, software development and the global connectivity of the internet, has created new opportunities for artists and designers to create and distribute their work. Traditional filmmaking has now been subsumed into a fluid and dynamic environment of adaptability and mutability, which in itself has created what Lev Manovitch called a 'new hybrid visual language'.

Graphic Design & Criticism

The Graphic Design and Criticism seminars are designed to increase your awareness of historical and contemporary critical debates, and hone your independent interpretive skills. Approaching criticism as a practical tool for designers - for innovative thinking, practice related writing, and more focussed work production - this course will overview the shifts in critical ideas over the past century and focus on new modes of meaning, production and interpretation. 

This seminar series includes trips and visits and requires additional independent study within UAL's library and learning zones.
