Description

Learn how to master the craft of printing a repeated pattern onto a length of fabric. Guided by an experienced designer-maker you will receive advice about making both fashion and furnishing prints on fabric. With reference to historical and contemporary textile print designers to inform your ideas, you will interpret imagery, into artwork ready to screen print.

You will learn how to use a variety of repeating pattern structures, look at how to scale up the print, finalise the design and translate this to a repeating pattern. There will be plenty of opportunity to experiment with colour-ways, different varieties of printing binders and techniques. You will also experience printing on a variety of fabric types and learn about sourcing fabrics and printing substrates.

You will finish the course with a small length of printed fabric, suitable for either a fashion or furnishing project. Demonstrations and talks will provide you with plenty of tips along the way, including advice about how to continue printing in a professional studio, or by setting up your own low tech space.

Course Outcomes
You will leave with a unique length of printed fabric that can be sewn into a garment, hung on the wall, or turned into a furnishing project. You will have also made a small collection of complementary experimental prints. You will have developed your knowledge of sourcing fabrics and materials. You will also be familiar with opportunities for future development and ideas about continuing your practice.

Who Should Attend
Suitable for anyone with an interest in screen printing textiles, as well as artists wanting to design for a range of outcomes: interiors, fashion, or fine art. Invaluable for anyone wanting to pursue a career in screen printed textiles and ideal if you are considering setting up your own print studio. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary.
