Working alongside the experienced artist Doug Fishbone, this masterclass will help you to familiarise with the key issues in career development. With a particular focus on inspiring a confident, proactive approach to generating opportunities. You will begin the Friday evening on an off-site visit to explore some of the events currently shaping London’s vibrant art scene. You will waste no time the following day as you use your shared group experience, along with a number of case studies, to discuss the range of professional strategies available to artists. You will identify successful approaches to developing projects from the initial idea, through to completion. And will be encouraged to develop tangible strategies for making things happen. Learning from the experience and insight of an artist who has built an international career using all the strategies discussed, you will gain a realistic introduction to the professional art world in London by Doug Fishbone.

Course Outcomes

Tutor information

Doug Fishbone was born in New York in 1969 and earned an MA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London in 2003. He recently exhibited a major new project, Doug Fishbone's Leisure Land Golf - a 9 hole artist-designed miniature golf course - at the 2015 Venice Biennale: http://em15venice.co.uk/ and his project Made in China, in which he switched an Old Master painting with a cheap Chinese replica, was featured at the Dulwich Picture Gallery 2015 in London. His film Elmina, which had its world premiere in a solo exhibition at Tate Britain in 2010, was voted one of the most iconic artworks of the past 5 years by the website artinfo. Selected group exhibitions include: Transitio_MX 06, Mexico City, (2015); Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai (2014); Akademie der Kunste, Berlin (2013); Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool (2012); BFI, London (2012); SMBA-Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2011); FACT, Liverpool (2011); Dublin Contemporary (2011); ZKM Karslruhe, Germany (2011); Tate Britain (2010), Busan Biennale, Busan, South Korea (2008); Hayward Gallery, London (2008); British Art Show 6 (2006). He performs regularly at both international and UK venues, including appearances at London’s ICA and Southbank Centre. Fishbone lectures in professional practice at the University of Westminster and is a frequent visiting lecturer at Chelsea College of Arts, UAL. He has been invited to guest lecture at dozens of universities around the UK, including the RCA, Glasgow School of Art, Goldsmiths College, Christies, Sotheby's, and the Slade.
