Join us on location at some of London’s greatest galleries on History of Art. You will be taken on a journey through time and introduced to the themes throughout history that have shaped our current art world.

We will visit significant stages in the history of art, exploring ideas and movements that have inspired artists, such as, the Renaissance, Romanticism and Impressionism. We'll also consider how art is perceived today.

Above all, and most importantly, it will be a chance to enjoy original art up close.

  • British Museum for Classical Period
  • Victoria & Albert Museum for Medieval and Renaissance Art
  • National Gallery for Renaissance, Baroque and European Painting to 1900
  • Tate Britain for British Art from 1600 to Contemporary works.
  • Imperial War Museum, Lambeth for Art Collections from 1914 to present date
  • Royal Academy Courtyard for Tour of Private Galleries – Westend/Mayfair and Cork
  • Street area (or visit to Saatchi Gallery)
  • Tate Modern for International Art from 1900 to present date
Course Outcomes
You will leave the course with extensive knowledge of the London art world and the history of art in general, enriching your experiences of the capital's galleries. You'll be aware of the research, education and archive facilities available in London.

Who Should Attend 

Anyone interested in seeing and learning about original artworks; their importance, history and connections with our national visual culture. It could lead you to further study or a career in art dealing, collecting or curating. Students from outside London may find it a useful introduction to the capital's visual treasures.

Tutor information

Terry Sladden trained at Liverpool Art College and the Slade School in London.

After working in Canada and America, Terry ran the art department in a Cambridge-shire College.  Over the last 15 years, he has taught art history as well as developing his own studio work with a firm conviction that both academic and practical study gives a rich understanding of how important art is as a way of understanding our world.

Knowing and exploring the wonderful art world of galleries and museums in London is a joy for Terry to share with Art History Short Course students.
