Description

Explore the explosion of creativity in the inter-war years, 1919-1939. Developed in exactly the same period, Bauhaus and Art Deco are rarely juxtaposed, instead treated as two entirely separate entities. Through presentations, film clips, music and discussion, you will acquire the skill to visually recognise the key characteristics of Bauhaus and Art Deco design, and understand thoroughly the ideas and cultural changes that drove their development. There will also be an opportunity to put theory into practice as you design your own Bauhaus and Art Deco inspired designs for household decoration or use.

Course Outcome
You will be able to demonstrate a greater understanding of a period in which design developed characteristics that continue to influence the creative arts to the present day. You will understand the impact of technological advances in the first half of the 20th century and the historical context in which these two important design styles developed.

Who Should Attend
Anyone from any background with an interest in learning more about design styles and the historical context in which they evolved. A great compliment for art and design students or those with an interest in heritage, antiques, curating and collecting.
