Description

Whether you have a small roof terrace, petite patio, balcony or sprawling wilderness, this course will provide you with the ideas, and design know-how to start designing a creative new plot. Under the guidance of a professional garden designer, you will gain an understanding of balance, harmony and proportion with both hard and soft landscape elements. You will look at scale, proportion, space and the selection of materials. You will also be introduced to the principles of planting design and consider how with the creative and clever use of colour, lighting and composition, quick transformations can soon be achieved.

Course Outcomes
You will understand how scale and proportion are used in relation to architecture and buildings. You will start consider how space can be used effectively in a garden and relate all elements together to create a workable and effective design.

Who Should Attend
Suitable for anyone with an interest in garden and planting design, with an improvement or redesign project in mind. Also suitable for students studying in the spatial design field who wish to further their understanding of external spaces.

Tutor information

Julie Zeldin holds a BA Hons and MA PGD in Art History as well as a Diploma in English Garden Design.

She runs her own company, Julie Zeldin Garden and Landscape Design, which  is a thriving design studio in North London which specializes in Urban Garden Design throughout the south east. The studio is dedicated to creating gardens which are site specific and client led, with an emphasis on natural planting and high quality finishes.

Materials

Please bring the following materials with you on the first day:

  • Staedtler pigment fine liners set of 6 : Sizes 0.05 mm, 0.1 mm, 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm and 0.8 mm
  • Notebook and pen
  • Photos and a simple measured plan (length / width / any existing structures) of a current garden project / your own garden / a friends garden.
