Lighting is one of the most important elements of any interior, having the power to change moods and transform spaces. The course is designed to inspire and teach you how to design with light, from the very beginning of a project. From first considerations to calculating lighting levels, positioning fittings and creating the required atmosphere. By designing a lighting scheme for a specific space, you will learn all the fundamental principles. You will also learn how to draw up a lighting plan and specify the required fittings.
Planning a lighting scheme from first fix to final specification
Working with natural light
Artificial lighting, technologies and controls
Lighting effects and how to achieve them
Light, colour & materials
Working with regulations
Lighting all areas of the home including gardens
Drawing lighting plans & communicating ideas to clients and contractors
Writing a specification
You will leave with an understanding of the language and technology of lighting design, able to use natural and artificial lighting within interiors. What's more, you will speak to contractors and lighting designers, and take briefs from clients, with confidence.

Debbie Blandford has a Masters Degree from the Royal College of Art and 28 years experience working as design consultant to architectural practices and individual clients. She has a passion for working collaboratively and globally, resulting in a truly eclectic career. Projects have included hotels, bars and restaurants, aviation design, exhibitions, and high end residential interiors.
Clients have included the government of Saudi Arabia. Debbie also designs Furniture offering a truly bespoke interior service as well as developing products with Ross Lovegrove.
Alongside her professional career she has taught part time across all educational levels in both the public and private sectors as well as delivering specialist courses for companies including British Airways, The Foreign Office and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Currently Associate Lecturer at The University of the Arts London & Professor at Syracuse University.
