The emphasis of this professional practice course is to extend your knowledge and get you to focus on the practical concepts. Working with experts you will respond to exercises as you develop your skills and confidence in planning and presentation. From the concept through to scheduling, you will complete a design brief to industry standard. You studies will be contextualised through visits to an interior design studio, hotels and a workshop in a specialist London showroom. Your experienced tutor will share valuable insights and provide you with access to their personal resources. A number of highly respected industry professionals will further support your learning through guest lectures. A panel of professionals will also attend the final critique as you present your completed project at the end of the course. This dynamic experience will ensure you are familiar with the most up-to-date design trends and practices in hotel interior design. Creative and innovative thinking will be encouraged throughout the course as you develop and hone your skills to become a critical observer and contribute to the future of hospitality design.

You will have a greater confidence and knowledge of the processes involved within the hospitality design industry. You will have had the opportunity to work alongside some of the most respected professionals in the industry and developed your skills and portfolio to further develop your career in hotel design.
 
Who Should Attend
This course is designed for interior designers and architects considering a career change. Alternatively you could be an aspiring hotelier, who is keen to understand the design process of a hotel project.

Tutor information

Manuela Mannino is an Italian Architect and owner of THDP, a London and Turin Architecture and Interior Design practice specialising in hospitality design.  THDP was established in 2004 with partner Nicholas Hickson.  The studio has brought together some of Britain’s and Italy’s diverse design talents to serve the most prestigious International clients. THDP’s first project was the interior design for the Olympic Hotel Project ‘Pragelato Village Resort and Spa’ in Italy. Clients include Hilton, IHG and private investors. Working in London from 2000, she gained contract experience on residential developments projects: ‘Riverside Quarter’ and ‘Albion Riverside’ and designed the interiors for the contract design company CP Hart.  She brings her contemporary eclectic approach to projects, combined with her skills in design concept, to take care of the aesthetic link between architectural function and decorative details. Manuela is also a chartered member of RIBA.

Materials

Please bring the following materials with you on the first day:
  • Magazine images for your concept board (Not stuck down)

  • Surgical scalpel with 10A blades

  • An A2 portfolio to carry / transport your work in

Students wishing to use CAD for their architectural plans will need to bring in a laptop with relevant software.

Students preferring to hand draw their architectural plans, please bring the following materials:
  • A 0.3 retractable pencil with 2H leads

  • A retractable eraser

  • A Triangular scale rule with scales 1:20, 1;50 and 1:125

  • A 300mm Adjustable set square

  • Metric scale ruler (not a conversion scale)

  • Masking tape

  • Scissors

  • 5M tape measure

  • Box of office pins

As part of your research you may wish to do some printing. Please bring a small amount of cash to the course on your first day to credit your printing account.

1:50 plans of a hotel will be provided, however if you are already working on a hotel project, please bring 1:50 plans of the existing space, photocopies of these plan at 1:50 to create a model and, if possible photographs of the internal and external space.
