This course will teach you to create powerful and rich web applications in a standards-compliant way. HTML5 and CSS3 are a significant and exciting development for building websites and web applications that are cross-platform and device capable.
In HTML5 you'll learn how to create and use basic tags, create hyperlinks, place images and use tables. We'll cover everything from the fundamentals of web design concepts to structure and accessibility.
In CSS3 you'll have complete control of page layout but also more complex aspects including floating, positioning, rounded corners and other cutting-edge techniques. Finally, we will show you how to work 'live' on your project and how to upload your site. Please bring your own website ideas to work on. Please note this course is taught on a Mac computer.
You'll leave with HTML and CSS skills and have the confidence to build a website from scratch; not only designing, creating and managing it, but manipulating and altering its appearance.
Who Should Attend
Anyone who wants to learn how to create and manage a professional website using basic and intermediate HTML and CSS. You will need basic computer skills. Due to the intense nature of this course, you should commit to attend every session.
'Brilliant course! The tutor taught us a complicated subject in an engaging and manageable way that has really lit my enthusiasm for web design! We put our new skills into practice while we learnt to create our website throughout the course. It has given me a lot of confidence to continue working with web design and coding!' - Anon
"The teacher was knowledgeable, supportive and a great communicator. She made a complicated subject really easy to understand a put into practice. I just wish it had been one session longer, but that might be because I enjoyed it so much and did not want it to end!"
John Coumbe is a software trainer and developer.
He creates and delivers commercial training courses in web development.
He works as a visiting tutor at Birkbeck, University of London.
His development clients include The Guardian and Oxford University Press.
Peter Koraca is a digital designer and creative coder working at the crossover between art and design. He has been involved in projects ranging from digital maps and wayfinding strategies for London Heathrow Airport to interactive art pieces like ‘Thinking’ at Kunsthalen Charlotenborg in Copenhagen. Currently Peter heads the UX/UI design team at Deutsche Teleokm UK and in his spare time works on open source projects for schools like the data visualisation web-app ‘Tallis Habits’ for Thomas Tallis school in South London (a web-app that allows children to report and play with their learning habits). Peter is obsessed with simplicity on all levels. He believes in prototyping from the start and design centred around the user. Peter thinks products should fulfil a specific function and surprise and delight their users. Only when all these things are present, often unnoticed, can the real beauty emerge.
