Whether you're a beginner or you already have some experience of painting at home, you'll find that this course starts with the basics and allows you to acquire a range of useful technical skills. You will learn how to stretch paper, apply colour washes and use the paint to bring out the full translucent quality of the medium.The tutor will provide plenty of visual examples to stimulate ideas about style, colour and composition. With practice, you'll gain confidence in using your new-found skills at home. You may also choose to move on to other, more advanced courses.

Course Outcomes
You'll leave the course able to stretch paper, apply colour washes and use paint to bring out the full translucent quality of the watercolour medium. With practice, you'll gain confidence in using your newfound skills at home.

Who Should Attend
Ideal for those who've never painted before or who already have some experience of painting at home. Afterwards, you may choose to move on to a more advanced course.

Tutor information

Colin Hillier studied at Camberwell College of Arts and has an established teaching career having taught at Worthing College of Art and Design, Camberwell College of Arts and he has been delivering Short Courses since 1999.  

Colin lives and works in South East London and currently has work in private collections in the UK, Europe and the Caribbean.  

Colin feels privileged to have been involved in teaching a wide range of students, including a Turner Prize finalist, a Bafta winner and an exhibitor at the 2009 Venice Bienniallie.

Materials

Please bring the following materials with you on the first day:

  • Watercolour paints; if possible colours to include: Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine and Cerulean Blue
  • Small jam jars or tins for mixing
  • A selection of brushes, sizes, 2, 4, 6 (synthetic fibre brushes are suitable and are cheaper than animal hair)
  • A ½” household paintbrush
  • A palette
  • Soft drawing pencils, 2B, 4B or 6B
  • An eraser
  • Tissues/paper towels for spillages
