BA Interior & Spatial Design
Find out more about BA Interior and Spatial Design at Chelsea
This was a collaboration between Assembly and Chelsea College of Arts BA Interior and Spatial Design student Elliot Draper.
Splinters Cafe grew out of Elliot Draper's research that looked into the process of gentrification and the role coffee shops play within that process.
In collaboration with Assembly, Elliot designed a coffee machine from dysfunctional objects bought at a local market.
A coffee shop using the machine was subsquently opened for one day as part of a christmas market. Splinters Cafe proved such a success that it was re-installed for the Deptford Free Film Festival and is now a permanent fixture at the Old Deptford School.
The project has also generated a DIY starter kit for setting up a local cafe.
The project was co-ordinated by Mariana Pestanana and Chelsea BA Interior and Spatial Design lecturer Shibboleth Shechter.
Assembly is a group of artists, designer-makers, bakers and gardeners based at the Old Tidemill School in Deptford.
