Josh Wright is a BA Sculpture second year student at Camberwell College of Arts.
It seemed like the right place to be. The sculpture studio is this incredible space where all three years seem to pile work on top of each other leading to a great mix of people and different practices.
The course is quite a small one, which makes for a really sociable environment and the weekly trip to the pub helps with that too!
But in all seriousness I really would recommend this course to anyone, there’s a great bunch of very knowledgeable tutors that have varied practices incorporating painting, sculpture, performance and video.
My current practice explores my continuing fascination with employing artistic tropes found within painting and drawing for sculptural means.
Recently my work has combined two interests of mine; theatre and the rococo movement.
I had a great experience working on the exhibition. The opportunity opened my eyes to the trials and tribulations of curating a group show. Every artist had to make compromises to accommodate the other artworks surrounding their own.
But overall the exhibition was a great success and the opening was really crowded - not sure how anyone could really see the work!
Well deadlines always help push you to make finished work, which I think is important. The feedback I received for the work displayed was pretty positive so I guess it has spurred me on to develop more work.
I’m hoping to have at least two more shows before the summer. I’m still a little undecided about the work I’ll be showing just yet, but hopefully the work will develop through discussions with the other artists I plan to show with.
