Biography
Rupert Norfolk’s practice investigates the perceptual and conceptual possibilities of concrete and depicted things.
His drawing, sculpture and installations could be described as the art of displacement and contradiction. From his sandy desert made with more than 500 interlocking components cast from a Cumbrian beach set in a Dutch forest, a rustic stone wall where every rock is strangely symmetrical, to some tapestry lying in a billowed heap on the floor to disguise the counterfeit folds woven into the design.
Norfolk’s work is regularly exhibited in the UK and internationally, featuring at major museums such as Museo di Santa Giula (Brescia), Schirn Kunsthalle (Frankfurt), CAPC musée d’art contemporain (Bordeaux), Eastside Projects (Birmingham), The Saatchi Gallery, 176 Gallery, The Drawing Room (all London), Transmission Gallery (Glasgow), Chapter Gallery (Cardiff), Kunstwerke (Berlin) Netwerk / Center for Contemporary Art (Aalst, Belgium) and PS1 (New York).
