Follow our suggested route of study and be guided through a variety of specialist conservation techniques – gaining the practical skills and knowledge to apply this to your own personal artefacts, or to develop skills to progress a career in this industry. You’ll save 10% on standard course fees by booking our Paper Conservation Package.

Package includes:

Paper Characteristics
30 - 31 July  |  10am – 4.00pm  |  Monday and Tuesday
You will gain a fascinating insight into paper-making. The course will guide you in understanding the properties of different types of paper and how to select and customise papers for specific tasks.

Mounting and Framing Works of Art on Paper
1 August  |  10am – 4.00pm  |  Wednesday
You will cover the basic techniques of fitting an artwork into a frame following conservation principles; selecting acid-free materials, safely securing the artwork, and adding protective isolating layers. The course will combine lectures, discussions and practical exercises.

Paper Conservation – An Introduction
2 - August  |  10am – 4.30pm  |  Thursday
You will be introduced to the key factors contributing to the deterioration of paper-based cultural artefacts such as prints, drawings and watercolours. The course will combine lectures, discussions and practical exercises. Please bring in a paper artefact of your own for examination and discussion.

Course Outcomes
You will have gained an insight into the subject of paper characteristics and conservation - understanding the ways in which works of art and archival documents on paper can become damaged as well as learning about some techniques for dealing with certain types of damage. You will acquire an awareness of preventive conservation processes and techniques. You will have gained an insight into conservation framing practices - understanding the ways in which framing can be used to help protect artworks on paper from agents of deterioration.

Anyone with an interest in the conservation of works of art on paper, including owners of artworks, artists, and anyone interested in practical conservation work.
