Join Archival Box Making and learn how to make a selection of archival folders and boxes that can be used to safely house paper objects and aid their conservation for years to come.

You will gain skills and knowledge to create basic archival boxes that can be readily re-produced with easily sourced materials from specialist suppliers. You will also consider solutions to working within a budget and or time constraints.

Working alongside a trained conservator, you will be shown measuring, cutting and folding techniques and will produce a selection of enclosures during the course of the day.

Course Outcomes
By the end of the course you will have produced folders and boxes that can be re-created using minimal specialist equipment. You will receive templates enabling you to re-produce boxes and folders at home or in the workplace. You will also receive a list of reputable materials suppliers. The skills learnt can be expanded upon to produce more intricate types of boxes and folders.

This course is aimed at those wishing to learn how to safely house paper objects. It would be particularly suited to someone working with a collection of works on paper, whether that be a personal collection or within an archive.

Tutor information

Roo Foley is a paper conservator and co-director of Foley Schalkx Conservation Ltd, a private conservation studio specialising in the conservation of modern and contemporary works of art on paper, primarily for private clients and commercial galleries.

Roo studied paper conservation at Camberwell College of the Arts, UAL, and has worked in private practise for 5 years. She also has experience working in archives within the public sector.
