Hotel Inspector visits Chelsea alumni

Channel 5’s series The Hotel Inspector visited Artist in Residence in Brighton - a guesthouse which has transformed into an art hotel and exhibition space. Founder Justin Salisbury, together with Art Director Charlie Newey (Chelsea, 2006) and Creative Assistant Rebecca Loughton (Chelsea, 2006), have now started a new venture in Penzance - another vibrant and eclectic Art Hotel. The idea with each hotel is to give artists the opportunity to create their own Artist Room and display their work within the space. Eight artists have been chosen to create the rooms in Penzance with designs ranging from Urban Street Art to Handcrafted Textiles. Visit the website to book rooms and find out more

The Transition Gallery
Chelsea Prize is awarded to a graduating BA Fine Art student (or students) from Chelsea College of Art. The award is for a show at Transition and accompanying support and advice from the gallery staff. This year's recipients are Molly Beth White (Chelsea, 2010) and Lewis Dalton Gilbert (Chelsea, 2010). Vestige is a showcase for the two selected artists and will continue until 5 September.

Chelsea alumni are invited to attend this year’s MA VIP Breakfast Private View and evening Private View taking place on Wednesday 1 September. The breakfast PV will take place between 8-11am and the evening event starts at 6pm. These events provide an exclusive opportunity to view, meet and celebrate with graduating students. LCF alumna dresses Paloma Faith

Samuel Dougal (LCF, 2010) graduated from the BA in Bespoke Tailoring this year. In the middle of his final collection he wanted to do something different, “I wanted to do something I was proud of before I reached my 21st birthday”. Dougal sent singer Paloma Faith a message through Twitter telling her he wanted to design and make something for her - she replied within hours and they met to discuss the project. Flexible Factory is a ‘pop up’ fashion outlet at the Plaza Shopping Centre and will showcase a variety of innovative and exciting graduate and alumni work from London College of Fashion. The inspiration behind the exhibits is as varied as the graduate demographic: concepts of evolving technology, nostalgia, kinetics and even a fighting samurai will be showcased within this experimental environment, culminating in a salon style catwalk show from 6.30pm on Thursday 9th September. Design Duo Jenny Holmes (LCF, 2006) and Dimitris Theocharidis (LCF, 2006), winners of the Fashion Fringe 2009, will be among the exhibitors - visit the website to find out more about their collaborations.

Chau Har Lee (LCF, 2002) has been shortlisted for the Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize together with Stephen Jones (CSM, 1979) and Giles Deacon (CSM, 1994) among others. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in November in The Dorchester and in addition to the prize money, the designer will receive an event in a Dorchester Collection hotel of their choice.

New gallery and research unit opens

SoundFjord, Unit 3b - Studio 28, 28 Lawrence Road, London, N15 4ER

Helen Frosi (Wimbledon, 2003) has opened SoundFjord , a new gallery and research unit which has been founded to redress the current lack of exhibiting space exclusively for works of sound art and focuses on the exhibition and documentation of art works. Yann Novak will inaugurate the exhibition programme with Stillness: Subtropical; a two part immersive sound installation with integral visual elements on until 28 August. The next exhibition Stillness: Oceanic will take place from 1 - 25 September.

Raymond Briggs (Wimbledon, 1953), who studied painting at Wimbledon, was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University this year. Dean of Wimbledon George Blacklock visited him at his home to discuss his time at Wimbledon and to get his reaction to the award. Visit the website to watch the video

Free residency to Vermont Studio Centre (VSC)

Teamed with the Vermont Studio Center, the largest international artists and writers residency in the United States, Christy Symington (Byam Shaw 2002) is Curator of COPYO9O9 International Art & Literature Exhibition in Notting Hill by the Gihon River Collective. This is an assembly of writers and visual artists who were in residency at VSC in September 2009.  COPYO9O9 is an exhibition a year on, with 5 additional events from 9 September - 3 October, that shares the benefits and experiences established during their residency, encourages travel beyond our everyday lives and motivates 'artists supporting artists'. Through this commemorative exhibition the GRC are also taking the initiative to provide funding for a UK artist or writer to attend a VSC residency from the proceeds of an affordable Small Works Fundraiser as endorsed in a statement by Yinka Shonibare. Tom Hunter - Anchor & Hope

Tom Hunter to receive Honorary Fellowship

Tom Hunter (LCC, 1994) is to be presented with the distinguished Royal Photographic Society Honorary Fellowship which is awarded to only eight people each year. The first photographer to have a solo show at the National Portrait Gallery, Hunter has had many exhibitions throughout his career including A Journey Back at UAL’s Arts Gallery in 2008. The fellowships are awarded to “…distinguished persons having, from their position or attainments, an intimate connection with the science or fine art of photography or the application thereof.” Read more on the website

Louise Marlborough (LCC, 2001) returned home to Dublin after nine years abroad to discover her hometown blighted by vacant properties. She set up PrettyvacanT Dublin - an arts initiative that repurposes vacant spaces as temporary exhibition spaces for artists. After a number of successful exhibitions Louise curates Causing a Commotion which features work from four artists and will continue until 22 August at 7 Sandymount Green, Dublin.

Millie Burton (LCC, 2006) takes part in Lost Not Found (Edinburgh II) which sees 28 small artworks hidden around Edinburgh city centre. The event will continue until the 30 August.

Domestic Bliss - Gwen Turner

Camberwell alum launches graphic novel series

Gwen Turner (Camberwell, 2009) began the ground work for her graphic novel series while completing an MA in Visual Arts Illustration. Gwen has now finished the first episode of the series Domestic Bliss which, unlike previous comic trends, commits itself to real life and as a whole includes an environmental message. Gwen will be selling the comic as part of its launch on Sunday 22 August at the Pump House Gallery . Visit the website for more details.

Hilary Ellis (Camberwell, 2007) uses pen, pencil, ink, needles, threads and perforations to create work thoroughly invested in texture and surface. A Whiter Shade of Pale will showcase Ellis’ work at 221 Brompton Road, SW3 2EJ from 18 August - 4 September. Visit her website for further details

Artelier Interaction Residency Programme UK-Japan

Sarah Tse (CSM, 2009) is currently undertaking a two month residency in Japan which she began on 1 July. Located in Beppu, her residency is part of the wider Atelier Interaction Residency Programme encompassing residencies in unique sites in Fukuoka, Kobe, Kyoto, Nagasaki and Tokyo, designed to attract some of the UK’s leading contemporary artists, curators and creative practitioners to Japan. The residency will culminate in an exhibition in Beppu from 27 August, followed by a tour of the work to acclaimed Konya 2023 Gallery, Fukuoka and Nakaochiai Gallery, Tokyo. The residency and exhibition will be accompanied by a publication with essays by Atelier Interaction Residency Programme UK-Japan co-directors Keith Whittle, International Projects, Central Saint Martins and Takashi Serizawa. Rosie Leventon (CSM, 1981) presents Flooded Tunnels, an exhibition of her drawing work from 10 August - 4 September at The Muse at 269 .

Bright Young Things is a project which showcases Oxfordshire’s emerging talent. Organised by Emma Diffey (CSM, 1989), the event is free and will take place at Oxford Town Hall from 23 - 29 August.

Frida Larios (CSM, 2005) has recently been named as Ambassador for the International Council of Graphic Design Associations International Indigenous Design Network. Find out more on her blog

This month’s profile comes from Justin Knopp (CSM, 1994), who studied for a BA in Graphic Design at CSM. After working full-time in various Graphic Design studios, mainly in London, he recently returned to his roots and has turned his long-term letterpress hobby into a promising business - Typoretum . Justin says, “It still feels like early days but Typoretum appears to be benefitting from the current renaissance of interest in letterpress and I have never been so busy!”

Bridge is a professional skills development workshop specially designed for graphic design graduates. Taking place over an afternoon, emerge have organised a host of creative experts running talks, workshops and portfolio reviews to inspire and inform graduates. Emerge was set up by LCC MA students Holly McConnell and Jane Trustram. Workshops include advice on intellectual property rights, business start up and portfolio reviews. Daydreaming with... James Lavelle is a unique and visceral new exhibition bringing together some of the most high profile and acclaimed creative names working in music, art, film, fashion and design today. Curated by James Lavelle of UNKLE, contributors include Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones, Polly Borland, Nathan Coley, Jonas Burgert and Jamie Shovlin. The exhibition will take place at Haunch of Venison from 27 - 30 August.

Opportunities have arisen to perform in Selfridges department store on Oxford Street, or show screen based/sculptural work, as part of a three week programme of live, video and arts events from 12-31 August. The events will take place in the "Wonder Room Concept Store" on the ground floor of Selfridges; the busiest part of the shop.
