Aquascutum teams up with LCF alum

Beatrix Ong (LCF, 2000) will lend her design wisdom once again to Aquascutum; the fashion brand owned by Harold Tillman (LCF, 1965). The footwear and accessories designer has been commissioned to design a full collection for both men and women for the British heritage label for spring/summer 2011. Ong told Vogue, “"Aquascutum has such a strong brand heritage that going through the archive is already an honor. I am very excited to be part of its journey.”

International Talent Support runs a competition each year which creates a platform for designers in their last year of study; bridging the gap between colleges and the fashion industry. This year 5 of the 10 finalists for the Fashion Accessories award are LCF graduates from the MA Artefacts and MA Footwear courses; Rob Goodwin (LCF, 2007), Keeley Smith (LCF, 2009), Sarah Williams (LCF, 2005), Yu Wen Lu (LCF, 2009) and Si Kim (LCF, 2009).

Away Day

Various dates in May & June across different parks in South London

Engaging with suburban spaces of leisure, Away Day is a series of site-specific artworks for three public parks: Mostyn Gardens in Morden, Wandle Park in Colliers Wood and Ravensbury Park in Mitcham. The project comes from artist network POST, and is led by member Pippa Koszerek (Wimbledon, 2008) and guest curator David Berridge. There are many UAL alumni involved including Ruth Martindale, Catalina Garces de los Rios, Helen Jacobs and Emanuela Santini from Wimbledon. Visit the website for dates and directions.

Elinor Brass (Wimbledon, 2004) will be exhibiting You are Here , a new installation as part of the Noble Sage art gallery’s programme of contemporary displays from 12 – 23 May. Working with photography, drawing, printmaking and installation, she plays with the juxtaposition of objects and textures to create painterly responses to environments.

Alumni Blog

Louise Best (LCP, 2002) reminisces about her time at the London College of Printing. Follow the link to read the full blog on her website…

"When I was a porous, diligent art student at The London College of Printing (or the LCC as it is known these days) and I extended my printmaking skills, I felt as though I had come home. The thoughtful, meditative quality that comes with printmaking was a great soother to me in those (when I look back on it) quite troubled times."

Gallery Opening

The Charlie Dutton Gallery was opened on 15 April by CSM alumnus Charlie Dutton (CSM, 1996 & 2008). The inaugural two part show, Hazard Perception, features work from many UAL alumni. The first part finishes on 14 May and the second part will continue from 15 May – 18 June. Charlie says, “I’m thrilled to have so many alumni showing in my first show and for the rest of the year. Since graduating I have had such a strong network of artists from CSM and I really hope that this will just grow now.” Visit the website for further details.

In 1982 the influential artist Roy Trollope (CSM, 1954) set up the first part-time fine art degree programme at what was then St Martin's School of Art. The course used thematic approaches - such as asking questions about how stories are told, and what meanings are encapsulated in works of art – and showed Trollope to be a truly educational innovator. A website has been created detailing his life and work to mark the second anniversary of his death on April 7 2008.

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye (CSM, 1997) presents her work Essays and Documents at the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York until 22 May. Yiadom-Boakye speaks of the subjects she paints, “Although they are not real I think of them as people I have known…I admire them for their strength, if they are pathetic, they don’t survive. If I feel sorry for someone, I get rid of them. I don’t like to paint victims.”

Together with fellow photographer Harri Palviranta the two artists will present the exhibition Playgrounds at Belfast Exposed Photography until 18 June.

Tom Hunter (LCC, 1994) will show work in this year’s Photo Month in Krakow. The Person Unknown Series of 1997 combines compositions reminiscent of Vermeer van Delft’s pictures with depictions of everyday activities performed by residents of London squats.
