New Name for London College of Printing
As a more accurate reflection of its current and future areas of specialisation, London College of Printing is to become London College of Communication. The unveiling of the new name coincided with a ceremony on Wednesday 26 November, which celebrated the opening of the College's newly renovated facilities, designed by Allies and Morrison. The new name of the College will be in use from May 2004 with the launch of the new university.
The London Institute Art Collection Audit
The London Institute has recently undertaken an audit of its' art collection. The collection comprises work collected by the Institute since 1989. If you have any work in this collection email Eamonn Maxwell.

Mark McGowan champions British Cuisine
Camberwell graduate Mark McGowan has spent 12 days sitting in a bath of baked beans - to show his support for the full English breakfast.

Ocean Wave II
For his next piece of extraordinary art performance, Mark will set out on a solo trip from Peckham Library to Glasgow, using a supermarket shopping trolley. Along the way he will collect gifts from English people to hand out to the people of Scotland and Glasgow. Mark says 'the performance/event is a kind of reconciliation for the William Wallace thing. A kind of peace-keeping/goodwill mission to try and bridge the English, Scottish divide. I want to try and bring these two great countries back together. On the journey I will be singing Rod Stewart's timeless classic 'I am Sailing' to keep my spirits up'.

The Sex And The City girls have been awarded unbeatable fashion status by becoming the latest subject of the window display in Barneys department store in New York. Former CSM student Zac Posen has been chosen to create a gown to dress the caricature of Sex and And The City actress Kim Cattrall.

At the Lancome Colour Design Awards winners were CSM Fashion students Frances Howie (Colour), Erik Frenken (Innovation) and Denise Ho and Yong Fong (Modern Feminity).
Sir Terence Conran wins Prince Philip Designers Prize 2003
The man who besides making good design affordable on the high street, also launched the Conran Shop, a chain of restaurants, the charitable Conran Foundation and the design consultancy Conran and Partners, was honoured with the Prince Philip Designers Prize 2003.

A 15-foot (4.7-metre) bronze artwork by former Chelsea lecturer Henry Moore has become the most expensive British sculpture to be sold, according to auctioneers Christies.

Spiewak project - LCF student winners
LCF's BA Fashion Design Technology students Johanna Bloomfield, Yeung Mei Ming and Victoria Hussey have recently been awarded prizes by Spiewak, an American urban clothing company. Students won cash prizes as well as the chance to work in Spiewak's New York office.
LCF graduate launches leather label
Employing Italian-reared cow hide, Swarovski crystals, embossed suede and sterling silver trims, Polly Isabella Aldous enters the accessories market with eponymous label Polly Isabella. The award winning graduate left Cordwainers at London College of Fashion in 2002 having earned Emap's Student Accessory Designer of the Year and the Girdlers' Excellence in Accessories Award. She is now turning her talents to her leathergoods label, available for the S/S 04 season. Plans are in the pipeline for a more mainstream brand, PI2 later in the year.

Dune 10th Anniversary Prize
LCF BA Product Design and Development for the Fashion Industries student Nikki Robinson was announced the winner of the Dune 10th Anniversary Prize. Nikki will receive the prize of £1000 and the opportunity to work with Dune to develop her winning style, with her design in store for Spring/Summer 2004. The two runners up were Soo Jung Kim and Emily Tan.
Documentary maker Molly Dineen honoured
The work of documentary-maker and LCP graduate Molly Dineen was recognised at the Grierson 2003 British Documentary Awards ceremony, when she was presented with the first-ever Trustees' award.

Brightening Up London
Some of the capital's most famous buildings are to be lit up for Christmas. Buildings such as Tate Britain, the National Theatre, the Royal Exchange and the Imperial War Museum will be transformed. Stella McCartney is among the stars who have designed or chosen images which will be projected on to landmark buildings.

Graduates Professor Dato Jimmy Choo (Cordwainers), Jefferson Hack (London College of Printing) and Phoebe Philo (Central Saint Martins) have joined a host of celebrity and fashion names to raise money for the Red Cross, they and 80 other celebrities had a shot at standing behind the lens.

The Weather Project
'The Weather Project', Olafur Eliasson's current installation at Tate Modern, tempted
The Guardian to take up the challenge of art interaction on a colossal scale. Students from London College of Printing and Camberwell College of Arts were amongst the team of 60 volunteers persuaded to form a huge reverse G2 to reflect back, through the artificial hazy gold sunshine filling the Turbine Hall, from the giant mirror ceiling. London College of Printing graduate Linda Nylind was there to capture the creation as it developed.

The Winners of The Jerwood Photography Prize 2003
The winners of the new Jerwood Photography Prize 2003, were announced earlier this month with
former students of the London Institute winning 4 out of the 5 awards. Attracting over 600 applications, each applicant submitted portfolios of up to ten photographic prints. Winners will have their work published in Portfolio, the contemporary photography catalogue. There will also be an exhibition of the winning entries in February 2004.
Winners were Veronica Bailey (MA Communication Design, CSM), Polly Braden (PG Dip Photojournalism, LCP), Edgar Martins (BA Photography, LCP) and Naglaa Walker (BA Photography, LCP).

Artist Lucy Orta, one of the most unusual artists working today, launches her monograph at LCF. Orta's work defies categorisation; fusing art, architecture, fashion and social activism, creating a broad body of work ranging from wearable shelters and survival kits to giant dinners and art happenings based on recycled food. Lucy is the Rootstein Hopkins Chair of Fashion at London College of Fashion.

Linocuts, by former LCP graphic design student Michael Christopher Caine, illustrate extracts of the poem 'Lament' for Ignacio Sanchez Mejias. The work was produced as Caine's passing out work for his degree show at LCP in 1982. Examples of his work from his student days, up to his current productions, are represented in the Printing Historical Collection at LCP.

The group consists of film-makers, installation artists, sculptors, theatre practitioners, photographers, painters and dancers. Experimentation and diversity define the fundamental essence of the group. Works exhibited will range from limited edition and multiple pieces, painting, photography, video and live performance.
