Our purpose and key goals

This strategic area requires us to have a world-class physical environment and underlying infrastructure that supports our students and staff in their academic ambitions and increases our engagement with our wider communities.

We will do this by:

  • delivering sustainable new environments for our staff and students, reducing the number of our sites and delivering new academic buildings wherever existing facilities are not consistent with our ambitions;
  • providing more UAL-controlled student accommodation closer to our academic buildings;
  • maintaining our investment in traditional workshops, while increasing our investment in emerging technologies and developing our virtual environments;
  • developing efficient and effective University-wide operational systems that meet the needs of our staff and students;
  • providing a robust IT infrastructure which is consistent with our academic ambitions.

Our strategic actions

Specific initiatives to help us to achieve these goals include:

  • new and enhanced academic buildings for London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Camberwell College of Arts;
  • improved social and learning spaces to maximise informal interactions between staff and students;
  • ensuring that our new and existing buildings enable students and staff to showcase their creative practice, increase public engagement and build new collaborations with local communities;
  • increased investment in our physical and virtual libraries, collections, archives and learning environments to support more flexible learning and improve the organisation and management of our teaching and research.

Case study

Relocating

The relocation of Central Saint Martins to King’s Cross showed that an engaged community of students and faculty, and a public-focused facility, can be a tremendous catalyst for innovation and change. By moving our London College of Fashion and London College of Communication campuses to Olympicopolis, University of the Arts London next hopes to import 10,000 of the capital’s most creative and colourful students to a new growing cultural hub. These innovative thinkers would forge productive relationships with their neighbours in the community, from Newham Council to schools, cultural institutions to local residents. They would create events and hold exhibitions that would inspire, provoke, excite and educate. They would draw international attention to the evolving stage of the globally acclaimed 2012 Olympics. They would attract new business eager to tap into the vitality, energy and vision of a London’s new creative centre.

Growing

Students and staff from the London College of Fashion and the Cordwainers Community Gardeners, have been working on the Dye Garden at Mare Street, readying the beds to grow more dye and fabric plants for the new season. They were joined by artist, Zoe Burt, whose mission is to create a dress grown from seeds within the M25. Students have been using the garden to grow dye plants to create unique and environmentally friendly collections, and LCF has also welcomed the support of volunteers from Permablitz and the Cordwainers Community Gardeners.
