Drawing flowers for surface pattern design

Dates, Fees & Online booking

With florals being the mainstay of surface pattern design, this course is essential for those who wish to make a successful design career in a variety of surface pattern design disciplines, predominately printed textiles for fashion and furnishings, knitted and woven fabrics, wall coverings, ceramics and tiles.

When using floral images in design, no matter how simple or abstract the final flower shape, it must be perfectly proportioned to be credible.

You learn the basic principles of accurate flower drawing, and make detailed studies from cut flowers whilst learning about form, shadow, texture and perspective. Quick exercises build up your confidence and you use a variety of media to investigate different ways of colouring your work.

During the second part of the course you learn how to group and simplify your images whilst maintaining the essence of a beautifully drawn flower. We look at florals in textiles for both fashion and furnishing and develop ideas for a group of floral designs whilst exploring scale of image and layout.
